It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Shirley Dene Carrigy. On the morning of July 16th our beloved Shirley passed peacefully at the age of 99. Shirley was a supportive, compassionate, and loving mother, who loved to volunteer and support the community.
Shirley is survived by her children Molly, Colin (Janice), Brian (Tina) and Brendan (Megan), her grandchildren Laura Lee (Andrew), Caitlin (Seth), Maureen (Ryan), Nicholas (Marina) and Alec (Monica), and great grandchildren Oceania, Lalika, Victor and Nicole.
She was predeceased by her father Ernest James Wansbrough (1958), her mother Ada Louise Wansbrough (nee Hornsby) (1984), and her husband Maurice Anthony Carrigy (2025).
Shirley was born on October 3, 1925 at Wickepin, Western Australia (WA). She grew up living in a series of small towns in WA, as her father was transferred frequently as a postmaster. Shirley graduated from the University of WA with a Bachelor of Science in Zoology. In 1950, she married Maurice Carrigy.
In 1957, Shirley and Maurice immigrated to Canada and lived in Edmonton, Alberta, where they raised their four children. Later, she found time to study for a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Alberta.
In 1989, Maurice and Shirley moved to New York City. They returned to Canada in 1991 and lived in retirement in Canmore, Alberta. In Canmore she volunteered, enjoyed photography and painting, and was one of the original members of the Meanderthals hiking group.
We would like to thank the doctors and staff at the Golden Eagle View long-term care home for their excellent care of Shirley over the last 11 years.
A private family gathering will be held to mourn Shirley’s passing.
