Ludwig "Lud" Paul Cvik

It is with deep sadness that I’m sharing the news that my dad, Ludwig “Lud” Paul Cvik passed away on March 3, 2026, in Invermere, BC, just one month after his 88th birthday. Even though Alzheimer’s Disease robbed dad of the last years of his life, he still recognized me and knew who I was at the end and for that I am thankful.

Lud was born in Canmore and spent many years living and raising a family in the Bow Valley. Even though he moved away from Canmore when he retired, he always called Canmore home. He will be lovingly remembered by son Chris (Catherine). He was predeceased by his daughter Cynthia, wife Norah, long-time friend and travel companion Merceil Ahearn, parents Stephen and Mary Cvik, two sisters Rose and Margaret, and brothers Cyril and John.

Lud grew up in Canmore and dropped out of school to work. After a short stint at the Company Store in Canmore, he went to work for the Canmore Mines where he worked until it closed in 1979. Afterwards, he was fortunate like many others to find work in Exshaw with Canada Cement Lafarge. A back injury led to Lud retiring early and eventually relocating to Columere just outside of Fairmont, BC.

Like his older brothers, Lud loved fishing when he was growing up. He was a regular at the Canmore Legion playing darts, cards (pitch) and then moved onto the pool table. Later in life he loved being outside and took up golf where he was proud of his ‘hole in one’ trophy from Coy’s Par 3 golf course.

For many, many years Lud and Merceil travelled to Mexico as snowbirds spending several months there each winter. They would return to Columere where Lud was happiest being outside cutting the grass, tending to their small flower and vegetable garden and enjoying a glass of red wine for his efforts afterwards.

Lud’s family would like to thank Dr. Shannon Page, the nurses and staff at Columbia Garden Village – Ivy House for the respect, dignity, and care, they provided to him. We also want to recognize and thank Leanne at Heartfelt Companions for Seniors for the companionship she provided.

Lud will be buried in the Canmore Cemetery in a private ceremony. Any memorial donations can be be to the Hospice Society of the Columbia Valley at https://hospicesocietycv.com or the Alzheimers Society of Canada at https://alzheimer.ca
