Gottfried Haase, a distinguished figure in the food industry, passed away peacefully on July 30, 2025, in Canmore, Alberta. Born on March 25, 1940, in Maria Enzersdorf, Austria, Gottfried led a life marked by academic excellence, professional achievement, and a deep commitment to physical fitness and outdoor pursuits.
Gottfried's educational journey began at the Universität für Bodenkultur in Vienna, where he earned a degree in Agricultural Engineering. He furthered his studies by obtaining a PhD in Chemistry from the University of California, Davis. His academic background laid the foundation for a dynamic career in renowned food industry companies including Nestle, International Multifoods, and Kraft, where his contributions shaped practices and innovations that benefitted the sector.
An ardent advocate for health and wellness, Gottfried was deeply passionate about marathon running and physical fitness. His love for hiking led him to explore the breathtaking landscapes of Canada and Europe, where he found peace and solace in nature. These hobbies not only kept him fit but also enriched his spirit, allowing him to forge lasting memories with family and friends.
Gottfried is survived by his devoted wife, Virginia Haase, and their three children: Edward Haase of Montreal, Quebec; Christina Lawton (Jeff) of Eagle, Wisconsin; and Erika Haase of Sherwood Park, Alberta. He also cherished his role as a grandfather to Elise Lawton of Madison, Wisconsin.
He was preceded in death by his sister Gertraud (Traudl), his brother Walter, and his parents, Hermine and Walter Haase.
Gottfried will be honored during a series of services taking place at The Shrine Church of Our Lady of the Rockies in Canmore, Alberta. A Prayer Service will be held on August 13, 2025, at 7:00 PM, followed by a Mass on August 14 at 11:00 AM. Following Mass, a gathering will take place at the church from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM.
His remarkable legacy of professionalism, dedication to family, and passion for life will resonate through the hearts of all who knew him. Gottfried Haase leaves behind an indelible mark, inspiring future generations to pursue their passions and embrace the beauty of life.
The family wishes to thank the staff at the Canmore General Hospital for their attentive and compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to SOS Children’s Village.
