Gary Owen Truscott passed away on October 5, 2026, at the age of 85. Born on March 21, 1941, Gary lived a life marked by service, curiosity, devotion, and a deep love for the natural world.
Gary served in the Naval Reserve based out of Victoria, an early expression of the steady sense of duty that would remain with him throughout his life. He went on to build a distinguished career that reflected both skill and commitment. Before beginning his long tenure in Banff, he worked as a programmer analyst for Alberta Agriculture and also spent time in the mining industry in northwestern British Columbia. He later served for 30 years with the Banff National Park administration, contributing in meaningful ways to a place he cared for deeply.
His commitment to others extended beyond his formal work. Gary was active with the Public Service Alliance of Canada, representing union members in Banff National Park with dedication and principle. He was also a long-time member and supporter of the Bow Valley Naturalists and a thoughtful advocate for the protection of Bow Valley ecosystems. Those causes reflected values that shaped his life: respect for community, fairness, and a lasting responsibility to the environment.
Gary found great happiness outdoors and in discovery. He loved travelling the world and hiking the back country of the Central Rockies with his lifelong partner, Shirley. Together they created treasured memories, including exploring the Australian outback in a campervan and travelling through South Africa shortly after the release of Nelson Mandela and the end of the apartheid era. He also enjoyed reading and always looked forward to receiving his copies of Scientific American, a small but telling sign of his lifelong interest in learning and the wider world.
Above all, Gary’s life was rooted in enduring relationships. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Truscott, his partner of more than 40 years. He is also survived by his brother Potri Lightheart and by Richard, Christopher and Tom Campbell, the sons of his sister Julie Campbell who passed away 3 years ago. May the love they shared, the journeys they took together, and the values Gary lived by continue to bring comfort and pride to all who knew him.
Gary will be remembered with affection and gratitude—for his years of public service, for his advocacy on behalf of both people and the environment, and for the quiet joy he found in wild places, good books, and shared adventure. His life leaves a lasting impression on the family he loved, the colleagues and community he served, and the landscapes he worked to protect.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Gary's name to organizations working to protect the environment.
